Its always nice to get a pleasant surprise every now and then. I received just that at the Dechen Hawk's Soul Sessions show at the Fox Theatre last Saturday night in Boulder.
This band performed after the headliner in what I was worried would be a "okay now get up on out of here" play off band for the night. To my surprise, this band brought
a lively, fun, and complex afro-funk rhythm that I had not been expecting.
The band's frontman, Paa Kow, is originally from Ghana, West Africa and through his experience as a composer, director, and teacher is far more than a simple drummer but more
the heart of the band that keeps the beat vibrant and the people dancing. Thats not to undermine any of the other performers in the 8 piece band that includes Djembe drums,
trombone and trumpet, Keys and guitar, and electric bass. All of these mix into a cocktail with all of the smoothness of jazz, the vibrant kick of Afrobeat, and the feel
good flavor of funk. Many of the members are students or alumni of CU's own music school and seeing such outstanding homegrown CO talent gives me an incredible sense of
local pride. These guys are a true asset to the Mile High music scene.
You can find out more about them at http://www.byallmeansband.com and can catch them performing live for free on Monday, June 13th at the Southern Sun Pub in Boulder(21 and up).
